A Musical and Theatrical Perfomance that Challenges Established Binaries
A first time ever collaboration between Karnatic music and Kattaikuttu, the movement based musical theatre popular in rural Tamil Nadu. Titled Karnatic Kattaikuttu, it was conceptualised and created by the Karnatic musician Vidwan TM Krishna, Sangeetha Sivakumar and the legendary Kattaikuttu director and actor P Rajagopal and his wife, the scholar and dramaturge Hanne de Bruin. The production features 19 musicians and actors. The production explores what both forms share, where they differ and how they speak to and with each other. In an exhilarating exchange of repertoire elements, Karnatic and Kattaikuttu performers present eposides from the Mahabharata. At its centre, the programme features an unprecedented musical dialogue between Karnatic vocalist TM Krishna and P Rajagopal in which they reflect on the different perceptions of Karnatic music and Kattaikuttu and the social and caste-based differences that separate them, the nature and role of language and the artistic intricacies that define both forms. It is therefore as much an educational performance as it is cultural.
