William Gedney (1932-1989) is recognised as one of the key figures of American black-and-white street photography. His photographs of India were taken during two extensive trips, first as a Fullbright scholar from 1969 to 1971, when he lived in Benares for fourteen months with a local family, and ten years later during a four-month stay in Calcutta.

This exhibition brings to light the depth and significance of Gedney’s work for the history of photography in India. It is the first museum presentation dedicated to his India work.

The exhibition is curated by Shanay Jhaveri, Margaret Sartor and Devika Singh and is organised in collaboration with the Duke University Libraries.
