MUMBAI; April 1st 2019, Students of the Post Graduate Diploma course on Museology and Conservation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) are organising an exhibition “On The Rocks: Rocks. Minerals. Fossils.”
Rocks. Minerals. Fossils.
Our planet Earth has evolved continuously since its inception, over 4.5 billion years ago. Scientists & Geologists have been studying evolution of the earth, its structure, geological event, rock formations, minerals, history in the form of fossils which gives a better understanding of the geological history of our planet. Rocks, minerals and fossils, all these three components are interconnected. Rocks which are mostly made of a single or an aggregate of minerals, fossils provides a means to establish the relative ages of rocks as well as an understanding of layers of the earth’s stratification.
The exhibition ‘On The Rocks: Rocks. Minerals. Fossils.’ attempts to shed light on the types, formation, evolution and utility of rocks, minerals and fossils using the collections of rock, minerals and fossils of the Natural History Section of the CSMVS. This is the first time that these collections have been placed on display. The exhibition is curated and designed by the students of Post Graduate Diploma students in Museology & Conservation under the guidance of 4 mentors from the CSMVS Curatorial and Exhibition staff.

About the PG Diploma Course in Museology and Conservation at CSMVS
CSMVS introduced a Post Graduate Diploma course in Museology and Conservation in 2009 – 10 with the aim of carving out critically and creatively prospective museum professional with traits and skills related to good museum practices. This is a 1-year academic course held from July to May and covers various aspects of collection management, exhibit designing, project implementation, communication aids and leading edge ideas in conservation practices. These are taught through lectures, practical assignments as well as workshops. The Museum facilities such as Library, AV aids, IT resources and practical training in the Museum galleries and Conservation Centre are made freely available to students. This exhibition is a part of their course syllabus as a practical application to all that they are learning.

The course term starts in July every year with a batch of 20 students from various fields. The applications to this course open in May every year.
About the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS)
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, is a premier museum and cultural institution of India. It is a not-for-profit organization opened to the public in 1922 and is governed by a Board of Trustees. Designed by George Wittet, a British architect in 1909, the museum building is a Grade I Heritage Structure and is a fine example of the Indo Saracenic style of architecture. The Museum houses a 70,000-strong multicultural collection of artefacts from Asia and Europe. The Museum is a part of the recently declared The Victorian and Art Deco Ensemble of Mumbai UNESCO World Heritage Site.
