In the seventeenth century, India and the Netherlands were at the apex of their political and economic power and experienced what has been termed, a ‘Golden Age’. This booming era was accompanied by an open and tolerant atmosphere which stimulated a curiosity for other cultures. In this era of unprecedented levels of power and globalisation, there arose a fascinating artistic dialogue between India and the Netherlands. As a result of this exchange, painters in India and the Netherlands experimented with each other’s artistic imagination and techniques, to develop fascinating new forms of visual expression.

The exhibition is the first ever cooperation in India between both Museums. It includes 12 objects on loan from the Rijsksmuseum to CSMVS, who have added 10 pieces from their own collection to complement the selection in this special joint initiative. The whole project was conceptualized to celebrate the 400 years of cultural heritage between India and the Netherlands and the 350th death anniversary of the iconic Dutch Master Painter, Rembrandt. The exhibition has been curated jointly between the two Museums and highlights the cultural ties between both countries and was the basis of curation of this exhibition.

The exhibition is a collaborative effort between the CSMVS, Mumbai & Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, supported by the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Mumbai.
